I have had this scripture repeating itself over and over in my mind and heart: 1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.
What caught my attention was what we are called…a child of God. Can I tell you that I have been called a lot of things in my life and I have called myself a lot of things. There have been times in my life that others have called me things that were kind and some not so kind. I have been the worst at calling myself things that have not been kind, labeling myself by my faults and failures. I have been hurt by family, and I have been hurt by others in the family of God. I found this quote in a commentary as I was studying: If we are truly children of God, then it should show in our likeness to our Father and in our love for our “siblings.”
I’m so very thankful that we are not the names others call us or even the ones we have called ourselves. We are who God says we are. We are called His children. We are saved, blood bought, redeemed, restored, made new, forgiven, set free, complete in Christ. Oh my dear friend, the list goes on and on. We are so blessed by the never ending precious names that He has for us, that we need to forgive and let go of what others have called us and what we have called ourselves.
Father, we confess that we have called others things that just aren’t true. We have labeled them by how they treated us. We ask that you forgive us and help us to see others through Your eyes of love, mercy, and grace. May we lift them up in prayer instead of open our mouths to call them something unkind or to react to their words. Father we are so very thankful that You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
Oh what great love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God.
